Student story: Thinking about attending a careers fair?

Thomas Chalmers, ITMB (Information Technology Management for Business)

Recently Queen Mary hosted the annual Technology Fair in the Queens Building on campus. The  fair provided a great opportunity to meet and speak to a range of employers offering opportunities ranging from small summer internships to 24 month long graduate schemes.

By being able to speak and interact with employers, I was able to learn more about what their business has to offer and understand more about what you may be involved in if you apply to such schemes. Equally it’s a great way to discover new employers you may never have heard of but are keen to discover more. Whilst there is more and more information available online, I found being able to speak to current graduates or employees at the business a way of asking questions that may not be as accessible online. It’s a great way to gain an initial insight into firms and is an opportunity not to be missed.

Regardless of what year you are in, the Technology Fair and career fairs more broadly provide a great way to bridge the gap between you and the employers. It places you in a stronger position if you chose to apply given the knowledge and advice they provide.

As a second year looking towards year-long placement schemes, the Technology Fair allowed me to speak to employers such as Amazon, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs and more, each offering exciting opportunities I hope to apply to. Speaking directly to graduates that have been on the same scheme you are hoping to apply to, provides you with advice to strengthen your application and allows you to further pursue and discuss your interest in their business.

Following up from the event I feel more informed about the application process and more inspired to apply to businesses after speaking to their representatives. It’s an opportunity to develop your interest in companies and to learn more about business you haven’t even heard of. The best part about all of this is that the Technology Fair gathered some of the largest employers in the field on campus. This makes it even more effortless to discover more of the roles and opportunities on offer.
