Finding Finance Jobs

June 1, 2011

We were asked via Twitter the other day about where to find openings in financial institutions. Well, at this time of year it may be difficult to find front office openings as many of the roles will have been filled by either direct applicants or through the Internship pipeline.

So, you might want to look at other alternatives within finance, and think how your skills, aspirations and experience fit those alternatives.

There is a pretty comprehensive list of roles available on the Prospects website, and if you want to rethink your career plan it would be worth writing up a CV or listing all your skills and experience and then coming to speak to one of our Careers Advisers who will be able to work with you on an action plan.

Where to look for vacancies?

Of course once you know the sort of role you are looking for you will be able to narrow down the organisations you are looking to apply to, so naturally a good place to look are on their vacancy websites. However, there are a couple of other resources out there.

First up have a look on our JobOnline website which has had about 50 vacancies in the last four weeks related to finance. Then have a look at specialist websites like eFinancialCareers, or there is a list of websites available on our website, or take a look at Careers Tagged our online library.

Still not sure?

Come into QM Careers and have a chat with one of our Information Staff. We have some directories in the library you can either take away or use on site as reference.

Growth areas during a recession

November 10, 2010

Even during a recession there are some industries who will not only survive, but may even benefit from the economic situation.

As companies are having to take particular care of their spending, the credit control and billing specialist areas of accountancy are becoming increasingly sought after. Auditors and procurement managers are also needed to help with cutting costs. Businesses may also look to develop or maintain their computer systems to help improve their efficiency, so may be looking to recruit more IT roles.

According to a recent article in The Guardian, graduates can “beat the recession by adjusting their ambitions towards a related but less obvious goal as big business learns to make do and mend”.  So this means thinking about what is happening in the world of business right now, and how this links to job areas. For example, lawyers dealing with employment law will be needed to help advise on redundancy and compensation packages.  With pensions being in the spotlight, actuaries and pensions avisors will also be in demand.

As many companies have a green / environmental agenda, combined with the government’s renewable energy targets, positions within sustainable energies are also likely to increase.

IBM to extend IT recruitment programme

December 14, 2009

Things seem to be looking up for IT graduates, as IBM announced that it is looking to hire 150 graduates in 2010 compared to only 95 this year.

“There are new technologies that we are putting in place and they require different skills, so we want to have people who can start from scratch and learn those” commented IBM’s human resources director of the UK and Ireland division, Jonathan Ferrar.

This is echoed by Stephen Uden, head of skills and economic affairs at Microsoft, who recently claimed that availability of jobs in IT will grow at three times the rate of the general employment market over the next four years.
